Marc Hom, a Danish photographer, has spent the last twenty years capturing some of the world’s most famous stars in intimate, striking portraits. His latest show, Reframed, offers a new way to view these iconic photos.
The Fenimore Art Museum, located in Cooperstown, upstate New York, has installed 28 larger-than-life prints on the museum’s lawn overlooking Otsego Lake. The 11-foot-tall sculptures display Marc’s photographs in 3m-high flexible frames, creating a dynamic viewing experience.
Marc says, “It is about putting these familiar faces into an unexpected context.” The wind, rain and changing light continually reframe your perception of the images.
The museum’s indoor display is more traditional. The outdoor installation, with its massive, weather-exposed photographs, however, reinvents what a portrait exhibit can be.
Taylor to Tarantino
Marc’s retrospective book, Reframed, was published to complement his groundbreaking show. The 160-page book gathers 80 of Marc’s most famous celebrity portraits, including those of Samuel L. Jackson and Rafael Nadal. Also included are images of Cher, Angelina Jolie, Lupita Nyong’o, Quentin Tarantino, and Woody Harrelson.
This book is not only a collection of his most iconic works but also gives a glimpse behind the scenes at how this exhibition was created and installed. Its first-hand accounts and documentary-style photographs provide an insight into his ambitious goals.
The book will be sold at the museum starting 1 June and through Bookmarc New York beginning 20 June. You can also preorder it online.
Marc says, “This book is a celebration of the unexpected.” “My portraits have been reframed on the printed page.”
This ambitious project, whether experienced in person or through the book, showcases Marc’s brilliant portrait photography in a unique and thought-provoking manner. The unconventional outdoor installation and the traditional museum exhibiting space push the boundaries of our perception of and appreciation for our favourite stars.
The Fenimore Art Museum will host Reframed until 3 September. The exhibition will embark on a worldwide journey to offer audiences the chance to experience the immersive nature of the work. Denmark is one of the anticipated stops. The book that goes with the film is now available from teNeues Publishers.
